I have a 2002 F150 with a 4.6 Engine. While on a recent trip to Texas the Check Engine Light came on. The Ford dealer in McAllen, TX told me it was an exhust sensor and I had it replaced. On the way home from Texas, a valve or pushrod broke. Because of the unknown damage done internally, I am having a factory remanufactured engine installed. My question is: When the Check Engine Light came on in Texas, could it have been giving an indication that something was wrong other than the exhust sensor?
Like I said, I really don't know much about the engines of today. All I know is something let go inside the engine and I have a real mess. Again, thanks for the imput.
These are tough motors. I wondered what happened that the motor is that shot. Maybe a cam chain?...but they say they will out live the truck. Good luck......hope all works out.
i would guess if timing chain was stretched or tensioner broke, or vavle burnt you could have gotten the sensor failure and later the internal damage. It might all be releated, but the mechanic would have no way of knowing in the beginning what else was wrong.
Probably will never know what happened, as I was on the road and had the truck taken to a Ford Dealer. All they told me, it was not possible to determine the damage that had been caused internally, so the only alternative was to put in a new engine. I was to far away from home to debate it. Thanks for your encouragement.
At least this makes me more comfortable having to spend the money for the new engine. If there was no indication to the mechanic that determined it needed an exhust sensor, that something else was wrong, I certainly can not hold him responsible. It was just an unfortunate situation that happened. Thanks for the response.
