Weird speedo problems

Weird speedo problems
on my 79 4x4 my speedo is sitting at like 80 right now but when i start it up and start to move it goes all over there place. then when i get to about 5 mph it goes to zero. anybody have any idea what the problem is?

Have you inspected the cable? Id start with that.....disconnect both ends and see if the cable inside the sheath turns freely all the way down. Then pull the cable out of the sheath and look it over good. If it is kinked, broken or coming apart thats probably the problem. You should be able to obtain a replacement at most any good parts house. If you install a new cable in the sheath make sure it turns freely before re-connecting bpth ends. While you have it disconnected would be a good time to lube it too. You should be able to ask for speedo cable lube at the same parts house. It's usually either a dry graphite type lube or a wet graphite lube and comes in a tube. If the cable all checks out its either in the gear on the transmission/transfer case or a problem with the speedo head itself. Good luck......

Just throwing this out there, but I wonder if someone removed the needle and then re-positioned it wrong at one time. Not sure if that's even possible, but who knows.
Or did it just start doing this out of the blue?

I really don't know if it started out of the blue or not. When I got the truck I had it towed to the house and when I got it off the truck it was at zero but it did all that when I started moving it.
