My DPF

I bought my used 2008 (job1) F250 6.4 back in December with 62,000 miles on it. Boy have I got an education after that purchase that I wish I had before. First problem was drain fuel/water separator. Researched how to and drained... 2nd problem light pink fuel drained out, this was after putting 2 tanks of good fuel in it, truck came half full from used dealer. 3rd problem, "drive to clean exhaust" while on the interstate. This message started coming up often and not going away. Never saw the other messages I've heard of "cleaning exhaust" "exhaust clean". 4th problem, check engine light, reduced engine power. To the Ford shop. 5th problem, dpf clogged. 6th off road diesel used so no warranty. 7th problem dpf entry pressure sensor clogged with carbon, must replace. 8th problem EGR valve clogged, must be cleaned. 9th problem, don't know yet, going back to talk with shop this afternoon.
I just purchased a Spartan cat/dpf kit so if the shop doesn't have it fixed I'm hopefully I may be able to fix it next week. I have a few choice words for the used dealer I bought from.

sorry to hear about your troubles..

DPF clogged.. you aren't having them fix that, right?
you are doing the DPF delete.

u will still need the DPF sensor I think.. altho I've heard that Spartan has a setup now that doesn't need the sensors connected.

good luck, and keep on coming by, lots of very knowledgeable and helpful folks here.

Sam

Yeah,

sounds like you really had a bad string of luck. Most likely some mis-diagnosis in there along the way did not help.

Don't let them get away with denying warranty just because of dyed fuel! Dyed fuel does not necessarily mean it wasnt ULSD, only that road use tax was not collected.

Oh man, I just bought my first diesel. An 08 f350 with 68,000 on it. It's been great so far (knock on wood) in the first 1,000 miles. But, after reading this forum for the last 4 days, I am a bit paranoid.

Good luck!

change your oil & filter at 5000 miles and fuel filter at 10,000 miles,
check the water trap ( lower fuel filter) some say weekly, I do it monthly
and watch for level in the rad overflow (aka degas bottle) and you should be fine.

I bought mine, 1st diesel, 08 6.4 dually at 45k miles and now almost at 65k.is a blast to haul my trailer with and can do anything.

1st time, long bed, dually and diesel all at once.. its fun!

Thanks Sam. What am I looking for on the Degas bottle? Just that it is filled adequately?

Check to ensure it it between the low and full lines...never ever let it get below the lower line. You do not want air sucked into the motor.

Has the nitrate level ever been checked?

Thank you!

Nitrate level?! I haven't checked it, it went through the 100 point check, and I had it independently checked out. But I myself have not checked the nitrate level (I've had her for only a few weeks).

I've been reading on here non-stop and the knowledge i've picked up has been great.

Usually the dealer does not have the strips..at least where I am.

Get it from NAPA. See this:

Welcome to the forum. Problem with getting the nitrate strips at NAPA is that you have to buy a whole jar of them (20 or so) and you only use 2 before they time out. I always ask for them at the Ford parts desk and they don't have them so thy go out and grab a couple frrom one of the techs and give them to me. Problem is you also need a card to read the results so you may have to buy the first set. Or try looking for a diesel coolant strips on line, maybe you'll find the reader card and the instructions. For our trucks we only need the nitrate reading which is kinda pink to mauve or something like that.
