Question Radio removal

As per my signature I've got an early '99.
How hard is it to remove the radio ? It is the stock one.
I'm hoping I don't have to pull the dash or crawl under the dash to do this.
Thanks

Easy deal, just go to the auto parts store or a stereo shop and buy a Ford Radio Removal tool, should be under $5. Insert them into the two holes on each side of the radio to un-lock the catches, it will then slide right out.

If the radio removal tools don't work, this will get it out.

Put the wire "tools" through the face of the stock radio, and firmly seat them at the bottom of the holes as shown in this photo (CLICK HERE), pull each tool away from each other, and pull slightly out.

The radio should come out.

I've never felt a bottom to the holes.I finally gave up after a few years of trying, figured if I ever really needed it out I may do some drilling or sawing. The empty hole might be good to put something in

If you need to get it out you can just pop the dash panel off and figure out what is going on then slide the radio out.

I had to do just what Superduty4X4 just said, the retainers had sprung out farther then the tool could push in. I fixed the retainers and reinstalled it correctly for the next need.

Actually, you can't. At least not without breaking that part of the plastic dash panel. There are two screws in the top of the radio hole that must be removed first, before the dash panel can come out.

See this photo to explain:

Does the stock radio need to come out to get the F650 dash in?
Can I make the radio removal tools outta heavy gauge wire?

No

Yes.
One thing I have found out about using the tools is that if you push them
in to far they won't depress the locking tabs enough to remove radio.
Certainly something you need to know if you make the tools yourself
because the OTC tools are tapered and notched.

I marked mine with tape.

By pushing them both outward the tabs depress.

First time I used the removal toos the radio popped right out. The second time it was a struggle and that is when I realized I was pushing the tools in too far. Trial + Error = Experience.
