My truck is nearing 180k with no problems to date, however my concern is that she will not handle another summer towing my travel trailer without some serious attention. My wife is telling me i need a new truck, i however realy like this one and have no reason to replace it other than towing my trailer is a bit much for it, furthermore i dont find it practical to have a superduty when all i do is drive to work and tow 4-5 times a summer.
Can one poke and stroke a 5.4 and still have it go 100k+? (currently have a well modded 4.6)
Is the 4r100 a easy swap?
can the running gear from 7700 or 250LD be swapped in while maintaining the 5 lug bolt patern?
Yes, cost is impeding. Poking the 5.4 means swapping the entire wiring harness as well as the donor ECU. If you can find a f-250 with a 7.3 that would be your best bet. I have one, a 2000, and it's a beaut. more power than I know what to do with. Turbocharged and gets about 20-22 mpg. So commuting its rather practical for me. but that's just my .02 on the SD. You're asking for a lot of work by poking and building the 5.4 ad add the running gear and tranny and thats a good chunk of change. The 7700 and 250 to the best of my knowledge have a seven and eight lug pattern. IMHO, I think it's more cost prohibitive for what you're looking for. But that's just me.

can the running gear from 7700 or 250LD be swapped in while maintaining the 5 lug bolt patern? = Not sure
Is all this going to cost more than its worth? = YES
Thanks all for any input.
Putting a 5.4 in is not that hard. But you will need to have the 4.6 computer tuned to run the 5.4 properly.
Put a 5.4 in, swap an Lightning intake assembly on it , build the tranny. Now you have a towing monster with tons of torque.

no reason to change the entire harness and ECM, a tuned 4.6 ecm runs the same as a tuned 5.4 ecm...

paschal offers a 6.2 kit for the 5.4 block
the 4r100 can be swapped in BUT no reason to, way too many trucks are running built 4r70 or 4r75's without issues

Well my bad then From all I've read here, the donor ECM is necessary to realize full potential if not to just make it run. I've never done one of these swaps. a heck of a lot more than i want to get into.

the only time you swap the ECM is when you swap from a 4r70 to 4r100 or vice-versa
Fordman,
Your wife wants a new truck. Her peace of mind is more important than saving a few thousand or your affection for the truck, unless you can have your mechanic convince her.
Well convincing her shouldn’t be too hard as i am the mechanic, but what I’m entertaining is replacing the transmission with a built 4R70W, and re-gear the truck to a 4.56. If I am correct this setup should tow my 5500lb trailer plus gear quite well. Also I would up size the existing dual trans coolers I installed last summer. From what I have read on the board I should be alright with this setup. as for the 4.6, wind her up and let it eat!

I can throw in my 25 cents worth (its more than .02 cents cause I got a 5.4L in a 4.6L truck). Prepare to make brackets, bend and squeeze your arms around, and be good at fabrication. I managed to get a 5.4 in a '97 4x4. I did have the fuel curve up-ed cause if you don't it will rattle the valves. I changed the shift pressure on the tranny to accommodate the power. I did go on and do the headers and flex-a-lite fans along with under drive pulleys. I used the 4.6L ignition pack. I simply cut and molded the brackets to fit on the 5.4L. There was some slight mods but over all not too bad. I will say, spend the 260 bucks on a new flywheel cause after I got mine together and took it for a spin, it cracked! Ford now has one that has all the holes for whichever tranny and will bolt right up. Have fun!
