There is no specific thickness to get a set pressure. In order to get 70 PSI you need to have a gauge on there and adjust the spring by "shimming". I have seen everything from a BB to a small socket head cap screw that is trimmed and inserted into the base of the spring to set the pressure. I know the shim kits are out there, but you have to do it by trial and error.
ALWAYS WORK UP TO THE DESIRED PRESSURE!!!!!!!
What psi are you at now? One thing I will caution you on is the fuel pump will be under more load if you raise the pressure, this can cause a weak or failing pump to fail much quicker, then after you replace the pump, you will need to verify the pressure again.
