Im in the market for an extended cab f150 from 92-96. What is the best year to get? Whats the best 5.0 and what are the best mods for hp? I have found a 95 4 wheel drive with 97k extended cab for 5500 with a 5.0, is this a good deal?
I would say that is a great deal - as long as there isn't much rust. As far as the 302 differences, i don't think there is much over those years. I always like to buy towards the end of a model year spread that way the bugs are worked out of them. My dad has a 94 302 and its a hard runner, i have a 95 inline six. I say go for it!!
Also besides what Mustang and ford wrote; the 96's have improved E4OD's.
Look for:
oil pan rust
rad arm bushing deterioration
leaky radiator plastic side panels esp when engine/coolant is in the coll down period or in the morning when cold
rust in rear inner fender lips and below t'gate
auto hub operation (if eq.)
plus all the other usual stuff incl any leaks....etc..wtc..
good luck!
'94-95 5.0Ls might be MAF - all '96s are. You'll probably prefer MAF for the way it runs and how adaptive it is to mods, but you can't pull OBD-II codes yourself without a $200 scantool. EEC-IV engines ('84-95) only require a paperclip to pull the codes.
The 1992-1993 trucks are great, I own one, but the 94+ are nicer.
Why?
CHMSL (third brake light)
vinyl door panels instead of cloth. Mine get dirty quick
Air bag
better stereo
Side-door guard beams
nicer wheels
better seat build and cloth
R134 air
