sending unit is a resistor, remove the unit, check wire for breaks, repair as needed.

High resistance full, low resistance empty.

Taking it apart and spraying with carb cleaner might be all it needs.

No need, ......standard gage cluster, ALL fuel gages or interchangeable 83-85 years, not sure if same after 86 and EFI.

Any fuel gage sender unit, from a like size tank, 83-85 are interchangeable, after 86 and EFI, they are not.

And Gk50 is correct, all the sender may need is cleaned and inspected.
Any more questions, just fire away.

I thought you were doing the junk yard pulling? Thats the best way to tell you are getting the RIGHT part, too many returns taught me to always pull my own.
As far as I know ALL carbuerated Rangers use the same sender type, just specific to its tank capacity. Standard tank is 15.2 gal, those with a aux. rear tank, it is 11.0 gal.

did rangers from those years have both size tanks and if so and i am buying from a salvage shop over the phone, is there a way to ask them to check it so i can be sure i am getting the correct one. also, there a tons on ebay for 85 rangers but none say they will fit 83 or 84.

Most Rangers only have the 15.2 tank, the 11.0 is a aux rear tank.......Too many people cannot cross reference, and ebay descriptions are FAR from accurate, There are literally no differences in Rangers from 83-85. None that would affect this part.

OK, quoting from my 84 Ranger Ford handbook,
15.2 short wheelbase
17.0 long wheelbase except 4x2 with 2.0 and 2.3l engines.
13.0 aux. rear tank 4x4/4x2 long and short wheelbase.

My Chiltons makes NO distinction for fuel sender units from 83-85.

so are you saying any sender from any ranger 83-85 will fit, regardless of tank size, location, 4x4 or not, etc???
thanks

As long as it came from the same cap. tank......4x4, v6, 4 banger, means nothing.

Because FleaBay is retarded, I have almost quit looking there because of the incompetence encountered.

I had suggested checking in to LMC Truck for a fuel sender. They do not list a sender for the 83 model . They do list one for the 84 model. A phone call to them will clarify whether they have something that will work for you.

Given the age of your truck, poor electrical connections - corrosion of connectors, bad ground, etc. - could be the cause of your problem. Have you done any checking of connections to see if that will solve your trouble.

Also, another age related problem is the fact that many salvage yards will have shredded any vehicle that old. None of this is very encouraging, I know, but I hope you can come up with a solution somehow or another.
