Front Hub Preventative Maintenance ?????

Got 95K on the X and I'm a believer in preventative manitenance. With regards to the front wheel bearings is there any maintenance that can be performed on them such as disassemble, clean, lube and reassemble. Or are they just replaced when they fail?

I just pulled the 4X4 hubs, disassembled, lubed and reassembled and thought maybe the same thing needs to be done to the wheel bearings.

Looking for input from those who have changed them.

There sure is- Welcome to guzzle's Ford PSD Web Pages

That is the main page, and in addition to great info on mods, there is a maintenance section that deals with hub cleaning and lube.

I go a little over kill when it comes to this. I take my slide pins out and relube 2 times a year, both front and back. 1 time per year on the needle bearing lube. Takes me about 6-8 hours for front and back while I change over the tires from winter to summer. Every oil change the slide pins get a quick inspection to make sure there are no issues with the boots on them. I figure it is a small investment to have a nice smooth running vehicle, plus the water crossings I make to go fishin and the salty coast air give me a decent reason to go this extreme.

They have some kind of silicone grease special for the slide pins on the calipers. You should be able to find it at any auto parts place.

There are 3 Bearings in the Front Hub area. 1. Auto Hub Lock, 2. Needle Bearing on stub axle, 3. (most Important) Wheel Bearing.
