Power Steering Pump Question

Does anyone know of a heavy duty powersteering pump for our trucks or any suggestions. I've went through two in the past year. I also replaced the whole steering column. Any suggestions?

Your going to need to figure out why the pump keeps going out. About the only thing you could do beside the stock Ford pump would be a saginaw conversion, but I haven't looked into converting these trucks to saginaw pumps. Last I heard there was a saginaw pump that would bolt directly in place of these though with the use of older style lines.

What kind of fluid are you using in your pump? tire size? Off road a lot?

I dont know about a "stronger" one, but I have heard many people swap out theirs for the Econoline model pumps.. Quieter!

I dnt know the exact tire size. They are like 35s. And I never off road (4x4) my truck. The fluid is the cheap kind. That's probably my problem

Run some sort of Mercon rated ATF in the pump. I run Redline D4 synthetic ATF in mine. If the fluid is foamy there is air in the system. What is failing on the pumps?

well the first one was whinning real bad. Ireplaced it when I down the steering column. Now the second pumps pully is warped and is shredding the belt. I replaced the column because the steering wheel would move in all directions and sometimes when turning it would lock completely up.

Well then the failures are due to a bent pulley destroying the pump. New pulley and pump should take care of it. You really should use the proper pulley puller / installer to prevent damage to the pulley.

Yeah when I go back to get the new pump I will also buy a pully and have them put it on right there. Advanced Auto is great.

You cannot have them install the pulley for you. IIRC you have to bolt the pump in and then put the pulley on right? I haven't looked at one in a long time. The parts store will have the proper pulley puller/installer sitting there on the shelf for you also..

Now mine is leaking. Is it any big deal to get it off? I can't tell where its leaking because of my intercooler pipe is in the way. Hummm, I guess I could remove the tire and take a look. Is it just a matter of removing the bolts behind the pulley and pulling it off?

Yeah they're not hard to get off. Its just tight and not much room to really work. When you put it back on be careful not to break the little part that sticks out so you can connect the hose. That happen to me on the first one I put on

I usually remove the p/s pump while it is still attached to the mounting bracket. I remove the pulley from the pump while the whole assembly is on the workbench.

The saginaw pump mod is a good mod if you do it.
Good flowing pump that doesn't whine like ours.

I have a link somewhere

*searches*

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...ering-fix.html

This is on a 150, so its probably not the same part number.
