Just dropped by my friendly dealer parts counter... and picked up this tidbit..
Seems in the past 6 months / year... the number of EGR valves replaced have sharply plunged --- more so that can be explained by the factory procedure to clean it being now standard.
Is the new "pink dot" valve doing it?
Better FICM calibrations?
Or is it a rash of bad fuel from years past (before switch to ULSD in 2007)?
If the problems abated two years after the switch.. that is about the time for the fleet to come in with problems.. get serviced.. and are not seen again.
If you cleaned your EGR valve in the past 2 years... and cleaned it recently,
another factor could be coolant filters, people being better educated about the 6.0 ( owners and techs), and maybe all the people out of warranty going to deletes, or just better parts like BPD egr cooler.
have 6.4 had similar egr clogging problems?. just wondering since they only use the 15 ppm fuel

Clearly, the numbers driving with deletes is a major factor in cutting demand.
I don't think coolant filters affected EGR valves -- unless the coolant leak turned into valve killing deposits.
Also don't think BPD have anything to do with it - except for coolant leak caused valve issues.
I did talk to the parts guy abut the 6.4 valve... and apparently it is absolutely no problem --- very few replaced.
The 2011 is too early to tell.
So, the issue may, after all, be behind us.
No doubt the heavy use of things like cetane boost, generally better maintenance, etc. is helping.
I heard some fleets buy Ford cetane boost by the gallon cans!
In my case, I know my egr valve was hardly cleaned for several years, and since I got it to work properly, I regularly run a few runs of WOT to clean crud out of the EGR system / turbo / engine.
I too, am a better educated customer after a year and change.
If I can only monitor Ford warranty claims and parts sales... LOL... I would learn so much.
Humm, I am a little embarrassed to admit that i have never cleaned my EGR value. X runs great with no known issues or codes and 83K on the clock. I made the attempt but could not get it out! Are there any secrets, just bang on it and buy a new one? Help, please. Thanks.
i got a really big pair of channel-locks and a plactic hammer.
unbolted it, tapped the sides with hammer to loosen it up. then to big pair of channel-locks and wiggled it out.
