Sync/Nav display brightness madness

I like keeping my display in night mode all the time because the contrast makes it easier to see. I also keep the brightness set no higher than midscale, auto-dim mode off because it doesn't seem to behave properly in night mode..

The problem I have on my '10 Sync/Nav unit is it tends to want to default to maximum brightness more often than not, regardless of what I had it previously set. I find myself constantly reducing display brightness every time I start the truck.

I notice during sunrise or cloudy days a few different scenarios happen
- automatic headlights on, display is set to max brightness.
- headlights manually turned on, display is at maximum brightness with the + and - dim controls disabled. If I flip the headlight switch to auto, the display is max and the dimming controls are active. However, if I need the headlights on regardless of outside light, I can't change the brightness
- as the sun rises and outside light gets brigher, my display will alternate between max brightness and what I set it. Annoying!

Do any of you see this on your units? This is clearly a software/firmware configuration thing. Dealer says this is normal operation. The service advisor duplicated it on one of his trucks in his lot and send Ford Corporate a message. I told them it's a huge driving distraction at night because my cabin is lit up like a beacon. Ford Sync helpdesk says it's not their problem. WTH?!?

I have noticed as well that mine does not seem to behave properly in night made with auto-dim on. I haven't experimented with it though.

I will experiment with setting the brightness manually and see what mine does.
