I am looking for opinions on cooling for the 4R100 in my 2000 Excursion v10. I put about 3000 miles per year on my Ex, but 75% of it is towing my 35 foot travel trailer. I had the leaking front seal last year a number of times that ended up resulting in a fire while I was headed up to go hunting. I had the transmission completely rebuilt, billet torque converter, heavy duty parts, shift kit, etc, but I really want to improve the cooling as well. I have read that early model 2000's had inferior cooling because the transmission lines did not go through the bottom of the radiator they just went to the the transmission cooler directly. I have one of those early ones.
The other challenge I have is that I back my trailer up a VERY steep driveway at my house. I have seen that putting a 6.0 cooler on is the "way to go," but I am wondering if anyone has put a cooler on their Excursion or SD with an electric fan instead. Seems like for my driveway situation this may be superior.
Probably the only way you're going to fix this is to back up on 4x4L. That will lower the load on the transmission by 2.7:1.
A cooler with a fan should be a good thing for helping low speed cooling. Having the cooler in the radiator is mandatory for low speeds. The air to oil cooler is ineffective at low speeds. I don't know how much a fan will help.
