I have several Ford trucks (6) that have the Mazda M5OD R2 and R1 trannys in them. I have noticed a small amount of seepage and the sides of the trans, and am aware of the rubber plug problem. I plan on replacing the plugs with steel ones to correct the problem, but on one in particular it seems to be coming from the shifter area which is farther forward. Is there a seal/gasket where the shifter extends through the transmission cover? Also this tranny seems to be difficult to get in gear at times. Any help greatly appreciated.
The shifter arm runs into the shifter plate and has a small boot there. The boot is usually shot. You have to pull the three screws and lift the shifter arm out, the boot will come with it. The bushings that the shifter's pivot ball ride on are probably M.I.A. I would suggest replacing them, it'll take the slop out of your shifter. One of them should be on the shifter arm above the pivot ball and one stays in the shifter plate. I imagine all you'll find is a couple of steel springy washers.
The shifter plate to the trans case has a rubber seal that shouldn't really have gone bad. To remove the shifter plate you will have to drop the trans to get enough room. I would reccomend that you do so. The hard to shift part is probably worn shifter forks, you need to look at them and see if they need replacing. They damage easily when fluid levels get low.
I would also reccomend changing the ATF in there. Go to a synthetic if you want to get max life out of the trans. Helps MPG a little too. I personally prefer the Mobil brand synthetic ATF, but that's a choice that's up to you.
about the bushings being shot. I replaced the bushings and spring washers/shims. What a difference!!! Only problem I now see is that the parts are expensive. $4.35 for the bushings, $6.02 for the springs. Any other outlet???
Got mine from the local trans rebuilder. He was going through my top plate anyway as I had wasted one of the shifter forks due to low fluid. He actually had me discard the springy washers. Said he'd tryed it both ways and couldn't tell the difference. Haven't had any problems and it shifts great. Something to think about anyway.
The boot/bushing that seals the shifter to the cover plate is
shot. I priced the boot at ford and found out it is a unit that contains the plate and the boot ($35 OUCH) . I'm gonna try a work around by using the existing plate and a rubber grommet. I'll keep you guys posted on how it works
