What is the difference in length? Is there a good source on the conversion. I'm sure I could figure it all out. But id like to send out the drive lines while I rebuild the AOD transmission. I just want to know how many things I have to get, like t-case adapters and what not. Some AOD years suck too. So what do you have for me?
The 90+ truck AODs are better(stronger) than the earlier versions and anything that came in a car, and there were other small upgrades as year went by so get the latest version you can. If putting this in a 4x4 truck it is better to start with a 4x4 transmission because it will already have the correct output shaft, converting a 2wd isn't trivial. Best to get a donor truck to pull the parts from IMO, then you'll have the driveshafts, linkages, TV cable and bracket, and transfer case.
E4OD, you will need a stand alone controller or the harness, etc from a compatible truck that came factory with a E4OD/4x4 combo.
An AOD adapter kit, cost is $795
Add in the cost of the JY tranny (call it $100-$200 for a rebuildable core) and the $500 or so to rebuild the AOD to handle the 460 (you can't just do a basic rebuild or the 460 will just eat the AOD like a bag of peanuts!!), another $100-150 for a new torque converter, $120ish for a TV kickdown cable, and you are looking at $1600 plus, not counting the driveshafts, .
Compare that to a Baumann controller w/harness for $600 and another $1200 ($850 trans w/ converter, $150ish shipping, $200ish for the core) for a rebuilt E4OD sent to your door, ready to drop in and for the same $1600 you have the stronger trans with the advantage of being able to program the shifts that you want.
If you want to rebuild your own, figure $100-$200 for a core, $150-700 for a E4OD rebuild kit (basic kit w/frictions and steels to a complete HD kit with solenoids, new rear sprag, etc) $130 for a Torque converter, and $600 for the baumann, and you are looking at $1000-1600 if you do the rebuild yourself.
As for the driveshaft mods, your best bet is to either try and score a couple good used shafts from the JY from a E4OD/4x4 truck to swap in, or wait until you get it in and take the yoke to yoke measurement and then have your shafts modified to the exact size needed.
Hey, thanks on the info. (1) Where can I look up that info on the aod conversion plate? Why do you need it? Didn't 460's come stock with AOD a couple years latter. The E4OD rebuild shouldn't set me back that far. I have the lathe to cut the drum pistons back to install extra clutch disks. I also can be in and out of a trans is half a day. That why I would just rebuild/upgrade myself. The only problem is, I don't know where or what to buy to upgrade. Beyond just installing extra clutches, which I don't need to buy anything for. Except a spare clutch kit. I do however, feel like a complete retard. It is so clear now that I should just get the drive lines and t-case adapter from the donor truck. But that's kinda still a problem, see, because I don't want to buy another t-case, I kinda want to know what T-cases had the same splines/bolt pattern, so my donor transmission/t-case adapter will work. The goal would be to drive said truck to the wrecking yard. Get transmssion and drive line. Then go home and do this thing, without having to drive 2 hours each way to the wrecking yard, and without having to unnecessary spend money on a t-case. But! That might just be the way to go. Cuz, it would suck to be stuck broken down truck, and no way to get back to the wrecking yard.
The AOD was not available with a 460, it was a light duty trans that was available behind small blocks and 6cyls only. The E4OD is the one that was available behind the 460 and diesels. If you go with the E4OD you wont need an adapter kit. Also, you will need a trans from a 4x4 donor, not a 2WD. No need for a different t-case, as the case bolts to the back of the trans. You will need the driveshafts from a 4x4 E4OD donor tho. As for the upgrades, the easiest way, IMO, would be to get a trans from a 95up donor truck as it will already have the upgraded hard parts inside and then use a kit like this one to go thru the trans for the rebuild.

This application would need a conversion plate because the AOD is a small block transmission and the 460 is a big block.. so the trans bolt patterns don't match. For everything AOD see this link Ford-AOD.com the ultimate AOD Transmission Perfromance Website
