hello fellow ford fans. i have a 1964 ford f-100 292 v-8. My problem is when i am driving it and in 2ed gear going 40 there is no vibration at all but when shift to 3rd gear the truck vibrates at 40 miles an hour. is it possible for the tranny to cause the vibration ? any help will be aperciated
Deron
check for play at the output shaft on the trans-if you have side-to-side play, this could cause vibration- also, thouroughly check all the ujoints and especially the center bearing if its a 2-piece driveshaft. hope this helps.
old 65 thanks for the reply.
My problem is vibration in 3rd gear. today it was doiong it when i was ideling the motor with the clutch in. only does it in 3rd gear. i can wind it up to 50 in second gear and smooth as glass but when i go into 3rd it vobrates. i dont know what to make of it. any help will be greatly aperciated.

ok, are we talking about a "seat of your pants" vibration or a "can of rocks" noise type vibration? if its noise, check your linkage. if its a feeling, check that the shift linkage isnt rubbing on the cab floor or otherwise transfering vibrations. also, check your tranny and engine mounts. try to decribe what it feels like and i'll check back. good luck!
Deron did it make the noise before or is this the first time driving with this tranny. You must have found a bellhousing if your driving it. Email me your phone # I'll give you a call after work and see if we can't figure it out and move toward fixing it. Rich.
Yeah i found a bell housing for the truck. The vibration is only in the new tranny never had that problem with the other one. its real annoying. well hope to hear from you
I know this is an old post, but did y'all come up with a solution? I'm having the same problems. Feels like the truck is shaking apart after releasing the clutch in 3rd. Happens after shifting around 30 mph and smooths out when approaching 40 mph.
FWIW-- just another suggestion. may not pertain and i hope it doesn't. is it possible that the third gear cluster bearings are going out in the tranny. Where did you get the new tranny that you installed. if you know where it came from maybe ask them about it. maybe they got rid of it for a reason. just a thought. doing the vibration only in third gear really narrows it down. if you find out what it is be sure to tell us as it's really intriging. Dutch
I never got a call or pm so I don't know if he fixed it. gmills As far as your problem goes I'd start a new thread and give as much details as you can. Info like year and model, engine, tranny, 1 or 2 piece drive shaft, any recent work or additions, did it start suddenly or is it gradualy getting worse. Rich.
