Overheat Problem *Roadside Emergency*

Drove my truck for a 4hr journey, parked it for a day and a half. Started up just fine even though it was -7 out. Let it idle for about 15 minutes and take off, noticing my heat was not working at all. I thought i may have broken the cold/hot dial because i heard a small snap when i turned it. I continue to drive down the freeway about 4 miles and look at my temp gauge and about crap myself... near pegged!.... its -7 out without windchill! I do not see how a water pump would just take a crap like that, i see no coolant that ever leaks out of it normally. So i'm thinking thermostat? I'd really like to hear some ideas. Had to take some one elses car 2hrs back home, so it needs to be fixed tonight. Any help would be much appreciated!

Do you still have coolant in the degas bottle?? If so, sounds like the t-stat to me.

if it isn't the t-stat, any chance you have old coolant that froze, about all I can think of otherwise

I agree with above if you still have coolant. You could have pulled the t-stat and drove untill you made it to a parts store.Yea,you have lost some coolant but in that temperature it would not get hot with no restriction.
Sometimes you can tap on them and get them to open.

Be careful with the T stat housing bolts....They have been known to break off in the water pump....

No heat from the heater and a hot motor sounds like no circulation. Could be or low or frozen coolant , bad t-stat, bad water pump. Glad I live in San Diego!

I was thinking frozen coolant also after i saw some that spewed out freeze on my frame. Didnt really get a chance to look at much as i was already running late. Strange thing is that it was just as cold a week ago and I had no problems. Maybe i should let it idle for a while and see if that will un-freeze the coolant... otherwise just replace the thermo if that doesnt work. Thank you for the replies!

you could pull the t-stat and see if the coolant is moving. If it isnt moving then it is frozen

Stick some cardboard in front of your radiator.

if at all possible try to get it in a garage and throw a space heater under it to help thaw it out, good luck

Ditto. I had a skybird freeze up once while driving. Minnesota, on my way to a new years party. I did a shorter than normal warm up at idle on a colder than normal day (and in MN that is freakin cold). Engine overheated and blew the top radiator hose.
Had to keep going the last mile cause I woulda froze walking. Out in the middle of nowhere and no traffic...

What ever you do, change and test the coolant for consistancy. Get the test strips from ford.
