What transmissions can I use?

I have a 1982 F150 300ci 6 with a T170FS (code RUG) SROD 3 speed overdrive transmission with a bad reverse gear. Anyone know what better manual transmission, 4 speed or 5 speed can I put in my F150 with the least amount of work and trouble?

The 2wd t-18 with 12" tail housing will plop right in there with no other mods (other than rotating the cross-member 180 degrees to line up the mounting holes)

I did this swap with my daily driver. I did not want to have to hassle with finding a different driveshaft or anything like that...

I don't know if the ZF transmission has the same length or not, but you would need a hydraulic clutch setup to swap one of those in.

Anyone else have any other suggestions as I would like to just bolt in a trans and not have to deal with changing over to a hydraulic clutch setup. Thanks

I went through the same issue about 4 or 5 years ago, did lots of research and decided in the end to rebuild the SROD. They get slammed for sure, but it's great for daily driving, has an O/D and is pretty light for pulling out and working on. It's done me well so far, I look after it and it was cheap to rebuild. I still don't like the sloppiness of the shifter but I still can't think of a better replacement short of putting in a toploader, but they're difficult to find, expensive and are not quite drop in.

I was told by the tech @ drivetrain.com that a RTS 3sp OD top loader would drop right in. My F150 is just a work truck that I don't use it much so the SROD is OK with me, I'm just cheap and don't want to spend much on fixing it. Anybody got any SROD parts?? I need the 1st / 2nd slider and the reverse idler gear as those are the parts that have the broken teeth. Also I would like to find the plastic reverse lock out piece that goes under the shifter but I know those are hard to find.

Where did you find the parts when you did your rebuild?

I ordered a rebuild kit through a local transmission shop, around $100. I've seen them on ebay as well.

Do you remember what was included in the rebuild kit you got?
