400M Cleveland Engine Number

G'day from Australia. I am hoping someone can help me locate the engine number on our 400M we imported from the US. I can't see it anywhere and I guess its under the paint somewhere but don't want to go rubbing paint off uneccessarily.

Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to FTE

There is no engine number. Beginning in 1948 (trucks-1949 cars), the entire vehicle is registered by its specific VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).

Prior to 1948/49, vehicles were registered by their engine number, but if the engine was changed, the number on the registration no longer matched.

The VIN system was invented by Les Kelley, who was the largest used car dealer in the world, and the founder of Kelley Blue Books.

btw: There is no such thing as a 400M, it's just a 400.

Thanks for the information an also the history behind it. Here in Oz we still use engine numbers and VIN just to complicate it more.

Are you talking about the casting #s maybe?

If so, look down on the block kinda where the starter goes.

I was after the engine number itself. All aussie engines are manufactured with a matching VIN and Engine number and when you replace the engine you have to notify the authorities of the change.

Thanks
