"almost" made it from Bucks County PA to Dickinson TX on my own fuel. 12v compressor didn't work very fast so I ended up backing up to an airline to finish transferring fuel.
It was a PITA to refill the drum though, had to do it in the truck because even if I was able to fabricate a lower valve assembly it would have been tough to maneuver a 500 lb drum into the back. With the valve assembly in place I had to lean the drum forward and stand it up once it cleared the lower part of the headliner by the back hatch.
Very rewarding to drive 1500 miles with my own fuel.
couldn't smell anything, both bungs were sealed up good with yellow tape and I had a valve on the hose, the air chuck fitting didn't need a valve. Besides biodiesel smells nowhere near as bad as petroleum even if there had been a little seepage from around the fittings.....
the drum was free and the fittings cost around $30. Oh and the straps cost $18. Far cry from $1K plus installation
Sweet! Did you consider mounting the drum on it's side so you can fit it in and out easier? Also, then you could tilt it slightly to one side to get it to drain better. A few well placed brackets would keep it from rolling around.

I like the idea. Very nice.
I was afraid that the bung connections would leak and didn't want a mess on my hands.
Also the hose was only to refill the tank and I just opened the rear hatch as you can see.
The mistake I made when I got home was putting the last 15-20 gallons of biodiesel I bought in Houston into my tank. Now I have to go rent a propane heater and put a tarp over my truck to get it running again. I figure I'm at about B75 right now- this would have never happened with the fuel we make, apparently the feedstock for this fuel was not clear veg oil although it looks like very nice fuel.
It is a great feeling to burn your own fuel; keep on, keeping on, most refined systems started out looking just like that.
this was only temporary for long distance trip, around town the 44 gallon tank is plenty! And not that I'd ever want to be in an accident but I'd rather have B100 on board than petroleum- biodegradable and also smells much better!
I carry 5 gal totes with me and have a lid/hose combination I've construction and just pour the totes one at a time, same idea just smaller scale containers. I run BioD and WVO.
great idea to use your own....
but I wonder about the legality of it ?
carrying lawnmower gas back home is one thing, but 55 gallons
and the heck with being rear ended, what if you hit someone or roll over,
NO amount of strapping will keep that weight in place ...
having been in a roll over and a rear ender - amazing where things like eye glasses, cell phones, etc end up...
heck I worry about the luggage flying forward in a crash
legality, shmegality- there are so many damn laws on the books now I'm sure we've all violated at least one so far this week and its only Wednesday.....
I know I can legally carry 1K pounds of methanol (2- 55 gal drums) or caustic potash so I'm comfortable with my load. I don't really see how it is any different than having it in the bed of a pickup truck, it was securely fastened.
We all take risks by getting out of bed, I was comfortable with the one I took and will do it again on a roadtrip, except maybe Canada I could have problems at the border
The tiedowns in the cargo area would be the weak point, the straps I used are rated at something like 7K lbs each. I also had the rear seat locked in place right in front of it.
