General question about 77 F150

Hello to everyone and happy new year!

I recently purchased the above vehicle and plan to do a bit of fixing up (actually a lot ) and need to ask some questions. Sorry that this may be a bit long, but I thought I would tell you a bit about my truck (pictures later tonight).
  1. The engine is an Olds 403 from a 1978 something or other
  2. The transmission is a 1978 400 hydromatic and beefed up to pull 4000 lbs
  3. Edelbrock 4bl carb (sucks some major fuel!)
  4. Rear end is a 278 highway and is rare (previous owners states) and is 9 inch
  5. Intake is a Summit star step racing intake
  6. Radiator is from a 77 Ford and is heavy duty and piping was reversed so it can take anti freeze (not sure I understand this at all!!!!!)
  7. Front u joints are from a 78 olds and rear are from a 77 ford
  8. I guess it had A/C because the previous owner stated that it blew up and corroded all of the ducting behind the dash and was removed.
  9. Has a push button starter (not sure if this is stock and if it is not I want to change it back, but unsure as to why someone would do that?????
The engine has about 2500 miles on it and runs well, although I believe it needs a tuneup.

There are a bunch of things I want to do and here is my list (jump in and give me ideas or point me in the right direction if you care too!)
  • Fix all of the ducting behind the dash (it is missing) the only thing that works is the defroster - no vacuum etc... so I am not sure where to start with that one
  • Horn does not work (PO had wired a horn in to the dash (big white button ) and I do not like that.
  • Left side turn signal lamp (dash) does not work - not sure if it is the bulb or something else (outside lights work and I can hear the signal when I use it.
  • No washer pump or hoses for windshield - would like some guidance on where this goes and how hard to put one on myself.
That should be a good start for all of you gurus. Hopefully as time progresses and I get smarter and better I will ask fewer questions, but my intent is to make it original and have fun doing the work myself, but I have not done this kind of stuff in over 30 years!

Thanks in advance!

Mike

I know this isn't going to help any but the first thing I would do is get all the non ford junk out of it.

not too much help here but a few things, the push button starter is probably just a novelty or someone hot wired it years ago or who knows what but getting a new ignition switch is pretty cheap. if your signals are working then it is most definately the bulb in the instrument cluster be careful messing with that thing mine literally crumbled when i went to change the lights and those are kinda pricey! my horn doesn't work either so I wired a button on the sterring collum where it is much less noticable until I can fix the steering wheel (another project for another day) as far as the washer goes LMC sells some universal kits and Im sure they are simple to instal I think it mounts on the left side on the engine compartment, at least thats where mine is mounted. good luck and post some pics sounds like the PO was into Olds?

I wish I could afford to - not sure what the 403 would get on the open market along with the transmission, but maybe I will see.

Yeah - I think the PO was into olds or got a great deal on this engine. From what I can gather the other person wanted the 302 engine and transmission and the PO wanted a bigger engine and transmission.

He sure did do some really stupid stuff like drilling all kinds of holes in the dash and the wiring is hanging from cross members etc... not a professional job at all and something I am going to change little by little.

Seems I cannot upload a photo or attachment - not sure why????

Thanks!

I agree to get all the none Ford stuff off, it will be a nightmare getting replacement parts for all the odd stuff on there.

Get it to run, then make sure it can stop and steer, go from there.

Sorry I was not more clear above - the truck runs strong, drives really well and the only oil leak I have is coming from the steering box which I plan to replace next weekend. I had the center drag link or some drag link replaced right after I bought it which made it drive a whole lot better.

I think that since it is a good driver already that I need a place to focus - either the engine etc... or all of the interior and cosmetic stuff.

I do agree though that it is a nightmare to figure out different parts etc... for something that was not stock.
