Battery cut off switch

Getting ready to install a battery cut off switch on my 53, Have starter solenoid on fender apron. Since bat is under floor board i would like the switch under the hood for easy access. What do most do and what type of switch that will look good. I was thinking about one of these, Drill it out so it fits on the batt side of the solenoid.

I have a big gray one with the handle but don't really see a spot i would like to mount it. Any good idea?

I installed mine on the cable running to the starter. Is this foolish? I have not finished the wiring so I have not tested it yet. It is a 12V system with a Ford 302. I used this type: Amazon.com: BATTERY CUTOFF SWITCH CAR RV BOAT RACECAR ATV CUT OFF !: Automotive

Thanks, Steve

I used one like this. The switch handle comes off and I mounted it so the switch is inside the cab and the wires are outside the firewall. Works fine and you can't see it unless you are under the dash.

Grizz's looks like the right one, note that it has current ratings. The other switch doesn't and looks to be plastic. If it gets hot and the cables touch metal...

It should not be on the feed to the starter, do you mean the cable to the starter solenoid?

Polar speed that sounds wrong to me. If it's on the starter side of the solenoid the entire truck is hot even with the switch off right. Ihave the that big gray switch so i'll mount it like grizz,s. Thanks for the input Bob

I have it hidden as an anti theft device. I just want the truck to not start. I don't want to kill everything in the truck, especially when I get around to putting in a radio. Is my logic sound or am I being goofy? Thanks Steve

They could still bump-start it, strictly speaking. You can run a separate wire to the radio's permanent power connection around the switch.

Alternatively, I could switch the hot wire to the coil...right? It would turn over but never start. They would walk away saying to themselves, "Piece of crap old truck won't start." That would be fun, unless they ran my battery down. Just a thought.

Thanks for your insight, Steve

If they want it that bad.....Then they can have it....and they can finish it so it will drive! Then when CHP finds it finished, then I can have it back running. Maybe Chip Foose will steal it! That would be cool! Steve

I bought one from LMC and mounted it on the negative terminal of my battery. It's there mostly for peace of mind while working on the truck as I can't imagine anyone wanting to steal it in its present condition.

I have no radio or clock so I put mine between the battery and solenoid. Kills all power to the truck.

BACAGrizz....I am a pediatrician and I love your movement! I agree 100%.

I have no radio so it really is not a problem for me. I tend to over think every problem and opportunity.

I belong to a Military Vehicle group and a few of them have installed a battery cut-off switch that requires a key. It is a Caterpillar part:

Caterpillar Equipment Battery Disconnect Switch 7N0718

They are typically installed under the passenger seat on the M35A2, Deuce and a half. They can be on the ground or hot side of the battery. I've seen them either way.
