New guy
Hey...since most of yall have no idea who I am, I figured I would say hey before I start lookin through some stuff. I have a project '49 F-1 that I finally got up on the road last year after pushing it around for 8 years. It is sporting a warmed up 289 and 4-speed...with Ford black steelies and whitewalls. She needs a little more work, some paint...but for now she runs and drives quite well.
My name is Eric. I enjoy building just about anything. Pretty much every time I spin a wrench on these older vehicles it is a learning experiance. I am also in the process of building a 1976 Honda CB360. It is something to do while I source parts for the Ford. I have peered at some of the pages here before, just never jumped in.
Mostly what I am here for is to learn more about my truck and find a few parts. Curently I am looking for a decent steering box, front leaf springs, a drop axle, and a tail gate in good shape. This winter will be a quiet one for the truck, as I only intend to replace the tie rods...this coming winter I would like to lower it 4", and rebuild/replace the steering box.

Welcome to FTE. Looks like a fun truck. As far as parts, have you tried Classic Haulers in Franklin Indiana? Classic Haulers F-1 Parts - Home They are part of Mid fifty F-100. Sy's sister is running it.

I thought I put a few in there...I will have to check into that. It may look a little rough, but she is solid through and through. Thanks GA for keeping old farm trucks undercoated!
Thanks for the site info. And in my back yard no less?!?
I may hit one of yall up on those springs soon depending on cost and shipping. My wife lost her job late last year, so I need to squeeze every cent out of what little I make (as does everyone). Thanks economy!

...in the mean time check it out...
This is right after I finished the wheels and put her new shoes on.
This is the mild 289. I still am working on a way to permanently mount the air cleaner, but it is coming along. She sure sounds like a lot more than a 289! I have cleaned up the wiring so it does not look to awful since this pic. It now has MSD wires and no carb spacer. The spacer will be going back on in the spring though.

Very cool!
I battled over steel vs. aluminum wheels for a while.
In the end, steel won. I would still like to find a full set of early Ford steel wheels that take the small caps...at least I think I do. Mine are late model wheels, but they look decent enough. My first idea was the slotted mags (which I still have a soft spot for). They looked ok, but the black steelies with wide whites gives it sort of a classy feel.
As of an hour ago, I found a set of front leaf springs locally for a decent price. Call it dumb luck, I just happened across a CL ad. He also has a steering box, which brings me to my next question...
How can you tell if a steering box is any good? IE...how much play should there be? It is currently hooked up to the front end for my inspection, however I have no idea what to inspect. I am not against rebuilding my existing box, but if I can get a decent one for less then I would be dumb not to!

Would that be a Thickstun Unit ?
Dawg-a-roo[/quote]
I am not gonna lie...I snagged it off of some guy on evilbay cause I had to have it. It has the Thickstun look, but I don't believe it to be. I think it is a (crappy) copy. The casting leaves a little to be desired, but at 6' away it looks great. For $140, I was expecting a little more than what I got. They are out there, just not nearly as popular as I would have expected. It is not light, so finding a good method to mount it has been interesting.
