I know this is more work than what you were looking at, but I'm just thinking out loud. I wonder how it would look if the tail lights were painted to match the paint scheme of the truck, including the pinstriping with those lights in it and then with the round lights in it.
Just to clear the air, having your taillights visible from the sides is not a requirement by law. Also, you meet the area requirement for the size of the taillight. There is no reason would be illegal or warrant any trouble from the police.
After 1968 front side markers were federally mandated. I'm not sure what year rear ones were.

That would look much better, it would look more finished off. They sell meetal panels to replace the tail lights. You could weld them in and make them seamless. That might look cool.
