egt location

i have guages coming and was wondering where every one puts their egt probe? In the manifold makes sense but how do you keep the shaving out of the turbo? Lastly whats the disadvantage to running one in the downpipe?

thanks

Put it in the DS manifold.
Drill and tap from underneath, minimal shavings get in the manifold that way.
Also, you can use a shop vac to suck out what little shavings get in there.
Most will be too small to have any affect on the turbo at all anyway.

Disadvantage to putting the probe in the downpipe?
It reads 3-400(???) degrees cooler than you are actually seeing pre turbo.

Most of the guys, put it in the left exhaust manifold right before the up pipe. Its easy to get at and it gives good EGT readings. If you put it in the down pipe it will read about 1000* low, It needs to be pre turbo to get proper readings. You can do a search to find a how to.

When you drill the manifold for the probe,( use safety glasses ) start with a small drill and work your way up to the proper size. ( I think it is a letter R drill and use a 1/8" npt tap ) by starting small most of the shavings will fall out and the shavings will be smaller, if any do make it to the turbo they will be small enough to blow no past th turbo wheel and not cause a problem

X2 what Bob said, I did it exactly his way, done. Use a little anti-sieze on the threads before you snug that probe nut thingy in your manifold. Take your time..

I put mine in the exhaust manifold. I placed a couple of strong magnets next to the location while drilling. It collected most all of the shavings. I then magnetized a nail and probed in the hole before and after I tapped the threads. Worked great!

What inch size is the letter R big? and if there is not a switch over where can you get the R bit. As I have not seen this size description on any of my bits.

Closest fractional bit is an 11/32. It's a hair larger than the R bit, but I've heard of people using it and having success. The R bit is meant for the 1/8 npt tap. I would think there would be a chance of oversizing the hole with the 11/32.

Where is everyone putting the sending unit for boost? In the intake manifold or putting a T in the map sensor boost line?

I used the T near the passenger side and ran the sensor wire across the firewall to the driver side zip tied to the wires that are already tucked up under the A/C intake near the back of the engine bay. Haven't had a problem with it at all.

The tubing and T fitting are pretty cheap, and if you're in a state with 'inspections' you can use the plastic 'loom' to cover the line and the wire so it all looks stock.

I think I have a pic of it in my profile, but my computer's being too slow to hunt it down. Send me a PM to remind me and I'll find it for you tomorrow.

I have the Isspro EV2's with electronic boost sensor. I tapped into the AIH delete plug from Clay.

I bought a little kit from lowes that had the drill bit and tap in it for about 14 bucks. You'll be surprised just how thin the manifold is. Take your time.
