Well journey home topped off all fluids...started out fine... About 20 minutes into the trip I notice my ect start to spike... Moved up quick to 220 and then bam dropped right back to 193 ... Pulled over popped the hood and noticed it had puked and the degas bottle was at the high mark.... Finished the remaining 210 miles with no incident... When I got home popped the hood again and noticed that the degas bottle was filled to the top... An hour later looked again and it was on the high side....
So here is the question... Obviously I over filled the degas bottle.... But what would have caused the sudden temp spike and fall.... Eot rose to 220 with the ect... All in less than a minute....would an overfilled degassing bottle add uneccesary pressure and delay the opening of the thermostat...thermostat is new....remainder of the trip eot and ect stayed within 8-10 degrees ...
Does it sound like head gaskets... There is no smoke and no loss of coolant... I did top it off before I left and didn't notice that the truck was on a incline so I'm sure I overfilled quite a bit....
But just to make sure were can I get one of these kits...price and name would help also... Thank you
I just bought one this past week. It was 39.95. Comes with the blue fluid to put in the tube to test with. They happened to have found one in stock. You might have to order one from your local parts house.
The bottle says "combustion leak indication fluid". I have no Brand name of it. All the directions are on the bottle, so I tossed the little card board with the brand.
My first thought was a thermostat that stuck closed and then finally opened.
The kit y'all are talking about can be picked up at Napa, It is made by Balkamp Inc, is called a block tester and is part number BK. 700-1006. I bought one a couple months ago and have the box sitting here, I want to say it was around $60, online price is $42.99.
At 80 mph the eot and ect stayed within 7-8 degrees on a flat highway ... on the climb on the mountains some steep grades... It went as high as 10-12 again I was cruising at 80-85 on the flat and on the grades...i was unloaded with maybe 500 or 600 lbs in camping gear...
My diagnosis approach is to eliminate the show stoppers, then go up from the lowest cost / easiest to fix, all the meanwhile guided by likely probability of failure based on past history of your unit and the fleet average...
Well did the test myself and it stayed blue.. No gasses... Had dealer check it quick and the mechanic threw a gauge on it and said the pressure was fine and that it is over filled... As fore the temp spike he said it could have been air in the system.. or that the thermostat hung up is the best bet considering the temp went down so quick...(the temp went down from 220 to 193 in like 4-5 seconds)
