My neighbors 2001 Grand Am 2.4 OHC won't start. Daughter drove it to the mall, parked it and came out and it won't start. Towed home and dad tries starting on starting fluid and it will fire. Won't run.
I hooked up the code reader and no codes, I/M shows as ready. Fuel pump runs at ignition on. Got me scratching my head.
Only other thing is the SECURITY light on the dash flashes with the key in the run position. Kid doesn't know if this is normally on but I doubt it.
Will a 'noid light test for pulse at the injectors?
I don't know much about GM 4's but if you say it will run on ether, perhaps the "security" feature is having the computer shut down the fuel pulse.
Even though most google searches for car repair stuff are useless, this time I got lucky. Apparently the 2001 Grand Am has a well-known issue with the security system going haywire and disabling the car. Something to do with the RKE (remote keyless entry) system.
The fix was simple and free. Insert key, turn to run and wait 10 minutes until the security light stops flashing. Turn off and then start. Worked like a charm and my neighbor thinks I am a genius. He promised a case of beer.
So, it appears the security system in this car disables injectors but not ignition.
And granted this is an easy fix, I'd be looking to murder someone if I had to wait ten minutes to bring someone to the hospital or if I was stuck in a ghetto somewhere waiting.
Edit: LazyK - I was typing when you posted but you were absolutely correct.
