I'm helping a friend wire his 51 ford sedan. Has 429 c6. We are putting a 78 ltd column in it. It has the turn signal/high-low headlight switch combined. Does anybody know what thr dark blue with orange tracer is for? I have ohmed all the other wires and figured out what they go to. The wire in question is grouped with the headlight wires but I can't get it to ohm to anything. Anybody with suggestions would be appreciated. Steve
This is a guess, but it may be the horn. Put your ohmmeter to a metal part of the column and see if you get a reading to ground when the horn button is pushed.
I don't have a good diagram of a 78 LTD. But the one I do have says the horn will have a yellow/lightblue and a darkblue if it didn't have cruise, and just a yellow/lightblue if it had cruise control. I can't find any lighting wiring at my source of diagrams.
Thanks Dave, I'll try it when I put the switch assembly back on the column. Hadn't thought about the horn. I haven't been able to find a schematic for this switch anywhere. It has a part # of E8A26 0n it and I figured it was a 78 and I thought we took it out of an LTD a few years back. Thanks again, Steve
A '78 LTD will have the high-beam switch on the floorboard, separate from the turn signal switch. The column you're using must be out of a later model, so that's where you'll want to focus your search. I have a Chilton's manual for '68-'88 full size sedans (I'm using it to rewire my '73 Galaxie) but unfortunately it doesn't show any of the column wiring for the later model years.
Thanks for the reply. It has a part number of E8A25 on it. That's what made me think it was a 78. The only dark blue/orange wire that I can find is for high side of wiper motor on anything. This has the high low beam/turn signals/emergency flashers on this switch and that's it. Thanks again, Steve
My '73 has BLUE/ORANGE going to the wiper motor just as you've found. However on this vintage, the wiper switch was a separate unit on the dashboard under the headlight switch.
Do you still have the keys to this column? You might try seeing if you have continuity between ground and the mystery wire with the key inserted. It might be part of the warning chime to let you know the key is in the ignition with the door open (my Galaxie has a feature like this). That's about the only other thing I could think of.
Thanks for the reply. Bad thing is the switch is gone. We remodeled the column and everything is gone except for the turn signal and hi lo switch. That may have been what it was. I'll let you know when I get it wired. Thanks, Steve
