another cummins swap

hey i was just wandering if anyone else has done this, And how much did it cost? i will be doing all the work myself, and what do you have to do to the a/c i heard it dont work with the turbo. and what exactly is an intercooler? do you have to have one? are they expensive? and will a dana 44 hold up to the weight?
ps, its an f250.

dont wanna leave you hanging so ill give you my 2 bits that i know. an intercooler cools the air from the turbo, cooler air means its denser so more power. you dont need one i dont guess, i mean the first generation cummins wasnt intercooled and earlier powerstrokes wasnt intercooled either. my girlfriends brother has a 95 powerstroke and its not intercooled. i have no idea how much one cost. as for the 44 it should hold up to the weight, but not so sure if it would hold up to the power of a tweeked cummins. i dont know a whole lot in that area

im working on it now, so far i got about 5k in parts total for my build but this includes body parts and stuff that you wouldnt need for the cummins swap. just in parts for the swap, i got about 3k. dont know about a/c, truck isnt equipped with it. inter cooler looks like a radiator that air gets pushed through to cool it down, when the air is compressed via the turbo, it gets hot. hotter air has less oxygen which in terms has less potential to make power. the 1st gen dodges (89-93) had no intercooler (IC) but everything after that did. you can add one to a 1st gen and you should see some gains. the d44 will hold the weight no problem, is only about 300lbs more then a 460, about 950lbs. if you do heavy off roading with the truck then the axles should prolly be upgraded unless you plan to keep the cummins stock (what the hell is the fun there?). im keeping my stock axles 44/60 with my truck because i do not go off road at all with it and only plan on a mild build 350ish hp

hope that helped some

The D44 will hold it just fine. And if you get a D60 front all you are effectively gaining is bigger U-joints....the outer shafts are the same size as in the D44.

Maybe get a better axle for the rear. Find a D70 from a 2wd 350 of that era. Mid 80's rear should bolt right in and give you some extra strength. I picked up a 14 bolt a while back and was going to cut the spring perches off and put them where I needed them..do a disc brake swap..and a locker but now I am waiting until the 60 craps out.

A decent intercooler should be anywhere from $150-$300. Depending on what it came from originally. I have about $2000 into just the cummins swap on my truck. I bought a complete running, driving dodge and parted it out. You'd be amazed at what some things are worth. I sold the dash pad from the dodge for $175 on ebay.

I'm in the middle of doing the swap myself. It's a very fun project and can't wait to finish it. My problem is that I couldn't make myself stop fixing things along the way while tearing it apart. Now it has turned into a full-on restoration of every nut and bolt.

To do the cummins swap right will end up costing you some bucks. Here is how mine costed out.

Running engine $2000
Transmission $1000
Intercooler $300
Tranny adapter (ZF5) $750
Motor Mounts $250
Water neck adapter
460 radiator $100
Several radiator hoses cut and spliced $100

Many other small items too. Don't fool yourself into thinking it's cheap. The good news is you can piece it all together and stretch out the cost. I'm going all out adding as many factory options as I can from the 73-79 era. A/C, Cruise, tilt, Cab lights, delay wipers, full '73 upper and lower body trim (crew cab high boy), factory bumpers, dual batteries, all oem parts (no aftermarket parts). This is the way Ford should have built the trucks in the 70s if they had a cummins motor to use (12 valve of course).

Good luck with your build.

You should start a thread on your build and post up some pics

One of these days I will get around to starting a thread. Too busy working on the truck in my spare time to get the thread going like I want. Here are some quick pics and a video for you Ford Cummins fans (like me).

Hey 79fordf250pickup,
For a little inspiration on your build here is what I had to start out with... It came with a straight six so I figured it may as well live the rest of its life with a straight six (cummins).

Thats my dream truck exactly!!!!! I had to settle because im poor lol!!! I have a 79 250 s/c 2wd 460ci. But i really want to do this swap!! I may start rounding up parts as i see them for sale cheap. Thats how i am doing my 75 280z race car. little by little buying used race car parts as they come available cheaply. But im fresh out of money and I dont hang around too many people with this hobby! so this being said im going to continue to try to find parts now and mabey in the future ill be able to do this swap with my truck. Keep trying craigslist/ebay/junkyard.
