I have got a transmission fluid leak in the vicinity of the external transmission filter on my 06 F350. Can I get away with leaving this or will I be in trouble if not repaired? It is my understanding that the external filter acts as a bypass and only sees a fraction of the oil pressure that exists in the transmission housing. Is this correct?

 

Yes, it's a bypass filter. As far as being able to "get away" with not repairing it I'll only say I wouldn't try it personally.

 

Sorry, I should have qualified that. I intend to repair myself but during fair weather if a leak of this type is not critical, and if it is critical will have to get on it right away.

 

I had this happen after replacing my filter on my 06. I found that the o-ring that was on the toilet paper filter holder cup was the culprit. From now on every time I replace the filter I will be replacing the o-ring. I would start there.
Mine leaked for about 2 weeks till I could get to fixing it. So if you a leak for a while I don't think it will be to much of a problem unless you run low on fluid.

Good point, will consider myself lucky if its only an O ring.
