2002 PSD stop running

Trucks at dealer being look at , had to be towed.
I was driving with no problems on the phone when I notice the motor getting quiet, I hit the peddle with no response.
The motor was knocking bad with no power. No warning lights came on. I drained it to see if there was water, there was none.
I changed the filter with no luck. Call ford for A tow truck 5hrs latter they showed up and took it to the dealer. Befor thy tow truck got there I tryed starting it again and it started, it was runing very rough and blowing black smoke so I let them tow it.
It also uses A lot of oil, around 5qts ever 4500 - 5000 miles. Truck has 8200 miles on it with no motor mods.
Any help please

Dealer called, said they can't find anything wrong. Said it is running fine.
That is what I was afraid of when it started befor they towed it.
I am sure it will happen again.

Offer to leave it @ the dealer for a few days and let them road test it with a diagnostic recorder (VDR). They may be able to catch the glitch and make the proper repair. Those kind of things (intermittent concerns) happen from time to time, I know it is frustrating for you as the owner, but also for the tech who has to find that needle in the haystack. Good Luck !

And while you are at it, have them do an oil consumption test and get it doccumented in case there is a future concern with regard to the oil consumption problem. A quart every 900 miles is excessive, though Ford may disagree.
The more problems you get doccumented, the more leverage you can bring to bear in the event they can't find the problem. I realize these intermittant problems can sometimes be hard to locate but, in their quest to make maximum utilization of the piece work system, I've also seen the techs do a sloppy job of road testing the vehicle to determine if their fix solved the problem. Proper diagnosis is always the hardest part.

Question 2002 PSD stop running

What was the ambient temperature when your problem started? The PSD is notorious for fuel line restrictions due to gelled fuel. Do you add any fuel treatments? This is just a line of thought that nobody was considering, GOOD LUCK!

Joe, I agree with you about sloppy rod tests by the techs. It is unfortunate for the customer that Ford does NOT pay their techs for road test times, so thats why they don't get road tested properly. A good site to visit is www.flatratetech.com for those who are interested in viewing some good ole fashion debates and seeing the technicians point of view.

The first think I thought of was gelling. I drained the filter to check for water or gelling, fuel was hot when it come out.
After draining it stater for approx 60secon. After that it would not start again, Thats when I changed the fuel filter. There was very little fuel in the water seperator. I filled it up with fuel and then tryed starting with no luck. About 2hr later and many tries later it started? I don't think it was gelling although it was below freezing. The fuel here is winterize and the truck was runing for around 4hrs by this point.
I am going to take all your advice.
Thanks.

The dealer said they did A full diagnostic on the motor and fuel system? Don't know if they did it or not, the paper work did not state that, just that they could not find anything wrong.

If the truck is running fine then the cam sensor will test good. It would have to be tested when the truck is running bad or not at all. It one that is hard to diagnos. Good luck

There were some camshaft end play problems with some of the 2002 models. There should be a tool available to the dealership to check camshaft end play from the hole in the front cover that the cam position sensor goes in. If you can post the engine serial number of your engine, I may be able to find out if your engine is in the serial number range of the camshaft end play problem. Your engine serial number should be on a label toward the front of the drivers side valve cover.
