I posted in the f 150 section but got no reply, so im moving it here:
How you doing, I just bought this truck for cheap, its running strong.
It has the 5.4 2v engine and ive been reading for a while and ive decided on a list of mods im gonna do to it, they are:
1. OBX Long Tube headers, custom off road true dual exhaust , 2.5" tubbing and cherry bombs
2. The Intake and o2 Gotts mod
3. k&n cone filter
4. True trac lock limmited slip
5. switching the 3.55s to 4.11
6. Troyer Performance Dual 16" Electric Fan Kit for 1997-2003 Ford F-series
7. Gryphon Cts with the dashboard adaptor
That is pretty much decided and i will order everythng on the list at once.
Ive built several engines but i have never even as much touch one of these modular ones. So I was wondering if maybe with the stock heads i would benefit from gettng the comp cam extreme energy xe268h? or should i get the xe262h? the cost is indiffernt to me. If so will the stock springs and retainers work? And will i have to remove the head to change them or is there any specific spring compressor to use?
I don't wanna say "DO NOT!" (even though I really do, lol), but I highly suggest you stay away from camshafts that are not designed for "trucks". Those comp cams you listed all shift the torque & power up on the RPM band. IMO, this is something you don't want, because then you will [unfortunately] realize how the stock truck intake manifold is designed for low-mid RPM torque, and not high-RPM horsepower. No matter what you do, you won't be able to change those long, skinny runners on the stock intake that promote low-RPM velocity.
Guitar maestro is right.Go drive a chevy truck with the 5.3 vortech. Pulls like a car engine in a truck. Doesn't make power til 3k rpm.You need a truck cam.
IMO I would skip all those mods but the electric fans and gears and put a procharger onit.
Ok thanx, I have another question, I bought the OBX long tubes which come with resonators and no cats, ive also bought the gryphon cts, since the gryphon takes a while to ship, Is there any performance/engine trouble if i ran the obx with the engine light on? Besided the engine light is there any trouble running cat free? (its an offroad truck so Im not asking bout the law),
