I have a fluctuating charging indicator. Also with lights and other power on the battery will begin to discharge. I suspect its a problem with the voltage regulator. Is the regulator integral with the alternator? If not will my symptoms be solved by only buying a voltage regulator? Thanks for
any respond.
Hey I don't know about regulator but my '91 had a charging problem. I replaced the alternator and battery and what it really turned out to be was one of the wires/fusible links going to the starter solenoid on the passenger side inner fender apron. The wire looked "normal" on the outside but was corroded just about in half under the insulation. I replaced with a new pc of fusible link wire from parts store, all was ok.
My truck has the same issue, with lights on doesn't charge as much, but when A/C or heat is on at idle the indicator shows a lot of discharge (about ~6V). I am going to start looking this weekend since temps are getting higher around here. I really don't want to replace the battery/alternator until I am sure that's the issue. Please let us know what you find.

What year truck do you have? If you have a 2G alternator then what you describe is normal. Those alternators put out very little power at idle.
This output graph shows the 2G is very weak on the low end:

Mine its a 1990 (7.5L). The issue is that if i am using the A/C and there is a heavy traffic (almost idle for 40 minutes) the truck barely starts the next time! I guess, I should get something different, huh?
Any prices/stores where I can get a nice deal on 3G 200amp alternators?
Measure the distance between the mounting holes on your existing alternator. It is most likely going to be 7" or 8.25". You order based on those dimensions. Call RJM if you have any questions.
I used their 7" 160 amp alternator to replace the factory 75 amp 2G on my 1992 F350 w/5.8L engine. I also purchased their charge cable/fuse kit and 3G alternator harness kit. It was one of the easiest swaps I ever did. Works great.
