I have a 1977 ford f100 with a 302 with an automatic trans and I want to put in a 5spd automatic transmission in its place. What yrs and make and models will interchange with this truk...thanks again!
Don't mean to burst your bubble...but it'll have to be pretty trick to get an auto 5 speed mated to that truck...which translates to major coin. I've heard of guys adapting E4OD's, but that's relatively expensive too considering cost of trans and stand alone computer. Gear Vendors has an OD unit that can effectively turn a 3 speed in to a '6 speed' by adding OD to every gear, but here again...pretty expensive. Last check was $2500+.
If you really search, you can dig up a used GV unit with electronics, adapter, etc., for around $1200. They are supposed to be bullet proof too. However, it will most likely require shortening your drive shaft.
A better option is an AOD (non-electronic). 'gives you the opportunity to have a numerically higher rear gear ratio (like a 3.73) for quick launches and the overdrive 4th gear will return decent gas mileage. The swap is common among the vintage 60s Ford crowd (Stangs, Falcons, Fairlanes, etc).
