Finding Headers

I bought a 78 F250 2 weeks ago. The old man that had it says his son stuck the 429 in it back last summer. His son passed away and I have no clue what year engine im looking for parts for. The truck runs great but im looking for some headers for it. I know im looking for BBF headers but how can I be sure they will fit? The engine is out of a Galaxie 500 im sure. Does it matter what year for the headers?

All 385 engines used the same headers. Except for a couple obvious high performance versions.

Hedman has a good set of 2wd headers as does L+L.

Thanks

Ok. Someone said that it might be a round or square port. Other than taking one off and looking how can I tell?

All 429/460 engines up until 1986 used the same exhaust port shape. Exhaust bolt pattern is also the same on early heads (which yours likely has) and late heads. When the 460s went to fuel injection in '87 they redesigned the heads and exhaust ports.

The main thing you need is headers that will fit your CHASSIS with a 460 installed. Ford never put a 429/460 in a 70s 4wd chassis, but there are plenty of manufacturers that offer headers for them as it is a common swap. All chassis are different, so make sure the headers are built for your year truck and configuration (4wd vs 2wd may use different headers).

Oh, and there is no "round vs square" port in big block Fords. Your friend who mentioned that must be a Chevy guy...

Ok. So any that will fit a 70's model BBF will work IF they will actually fit the chassis with the 429 in it. Hmm. Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

ok. so if a 78 F250 had a 460 option then if I can find headers to fit that setup then im good right? Since the 429 and the 460 share the bolt pattern and exhaust ports. ok. I have a 2wd single cab. Oh and yup. He's a chevy nut.

Cool, then you have the same setup as I do. On my '79 F250 2wd I'm running a cheap set of Hedman headers, which I got through Summit. They have a few options available, take a look and see what you like. If I had to do it over again, I'd go with the Hedman Elite series headers, which have thicker flanges and come ceramic coated. I had mine coated at a local shop and they burned off 6 months later, and the driver's side header warped on the front cylinder and blew the gasket out. I think the Elite headers would last longer.

The only hangup to this is if, by rare chance, your 429 is a Cobra Jet motor. Look at the casting numbers on the heads - they likely start with either C8VE, D0VE, or D3VE. *IF* it starts with a D0OR, then you have a Cobra Jet motor, in which case you need to immediate pull it out and trade with me for my 460...

Poisonoil, the scoop is from a stock '83ish Mustang GT. Was on my last truck when I bought it, and stayed on the hood when I swapped it onto the current truck. Its a poser scoop, which I hate, someday I might cut out the hood and see if it helps underhood temps at all.

I have a set of headers on a 351/400 if you want to pay for the shipping I'll send them out if they would fit

I have a set of the L&L shorty's that I only used for break in purposes I kept them thinking I would use them on another truck that is now on hold. Look them up, check the prices, and make me an offer.

To save this post from a bunch of "Number Dummy" B.S. you might want to ask him if they'll fit!!!!!!!

I would possibly be interested in these. What brand are they? Do you have any pics of them? Thanks.
