I have a 99 5.4L 4X4 Expedition that needs a trans. It has a 4R100 with the XL3P-HB on the trans tag. I have a replacement found at the local salvage yard but the tag is gone. How do I know if it will work? I have been told that there is another 4R100 used that year with XL1P-DB on the tag. Any Experts out there know what the differences are on these transmissions. I did notice mine has 12 pins in the gear select switch and the salvage one has 11 pins, same connector I think. Also the one from the salvage yard apears to be a ford reman, there is a sticker on the converter.
Thanks in advance for any one who can help me out on this.
Posted this under the drive train section also.
The salvage yard should have record of what the trans came out of. If not, I think I would find another that did keep proper records. The SD trucks also used the 4r100 and I would bet the ones behind the diesels were set up differently.
Thanks for the reply. The salvage yard did have it tagged saying it came out of a 99 Expedition 5.4L. I just would have felt better if the ID tag had been there and matched up also. From what I have found out so far it shoud work, I will cross my fingers and go for it.
You do have to be careful putting a lot of stock into tags like that. Sometimes they have more to do with where and when the part was manufactured and not so much what the application was.
Sounds like you have it under control though. Good luck with the install.

i am not an expert or anywhere close to that...if the yard can give you the VIN, may be a dealer can cross check for you...just a thought on my mind.
