There is a little clip that holds the rod attached to the tumbler in the door to the locking mechanism....this little clip pretty much came apart from rust and age. Is there ANYWHERE that I can get another one of these odd ball little clips? As it is, every time I try to lock the door using the key from the outside, the rod slips and I am unable to lock the truck.
I found one of those clips at the hardware store, but it was the wrong hand... that is, once the locking rod went thru the two rings, the part that clips to the rod was on the wrong side.
As I recall I modified the clip by removing one of the rings and I believe it worked. Would have been nice to find the right part, though.
It's a thought I guess...wonder if I could soder it back together? Probably would not hold very long. Seems that you could use some kind of a rubber piece on either side or something. It is overall a stupid design with that little hook.
If that clip ain't there, the rod slips in too far and there is your problem.
I doubt solder would hold since the clip is spring steel. I was surprised to find it locally at a hardware store and equally surprised that the one I found was the wrong hand (all sizes I found were wrong that way). The ones I found were called an accelerator rod clip. And, I have had several vehicles that had this same clip on the accelerator rod (only larger), so I guess the name makes sense.
Maybe there's another fix, so I'll shut up and leave this to someone else that has solved it.
I believe i have a few of these clips...the one that holds the 3" or so rod to the lock cylinder assy...drop me an email with the pertinent info...or post your email and I can shoot you an email..you will love the price :-)
