Head Gasket Questions
My friend uses a 1994 E350 to haul him and his band around on tours. They had a problem on their last trip and I want to try to fix it for them. It sounds like a head gasket to me (shade tree mechanic), but I have never done one on a ford truck but I have done one on an old BMW.
Symptoms: White smoke from tailpipe, overheating, leaking coolant.
They were on their way back to Atlanta from Charleston when it happened and drove it all the way home, shutting it off when it started to overheat. On the last leg, he says it ran hot for about 20 minutes. I know this doesn't sound good. On a BMW the head would be toast at this point but I don't know about fords with iron heads. Opinions would be helpful here.
My question is how tough is it to replace the gaskets and how likely is it that the heads are warped/cracked? Also, the leaking coolant makes me think that something failed on the cooling system. What are the usual suspects in the cooling system on this van?
At this point, the options are to let me take a stab at it or scrap it at a big loss so I want to try to tackle it if I can.
Thanks in advance for the help!
How much harder is it to drop an engine in it? I would imagine that beast is heavy!
Just trying to get away as cheaply as possible.
