I have fluid dripping from the water pump where the large rubber hose goes down from the driver's side to the bottom of the radiator. It doesn't appear to be a problem with the clamp not being tight enough. There is also quite a bit of corrosion around the outlet flange. What can I do? How else to know if the pump is going bad?
look up from under your truck to the waterpump. There is a small hole directly under the shaft housing and if there is rust or coolant leaking from teh hole your water pump is bad. Mine happened while hunting in colorado! simple three hour replacement of water pump. The outlet pipe which attaches to your waterpump may be cast iron. Mine was corroded but not all the way through. There is a replacement sent with a new or reman waterpump.
Hope that helps.
Does it look like this?
If so you might just need to replace the o-ring. I went ahead and replaced the lower hose since I was at it (it was 11 years old...)
My water pump went out about 4 months after I corrected this issue. It was the original pump and lasted about 240k miles....
If you have 100k miles +/- on the pump, you might be better off just replacing it with an Airtex off of ebay. You will have to drain the coolant either way you go.
Just curious if youins' have an idea of the longevity of a water pump based upon years rather than mileage.
I generate a lot of miles so my maintenance is based upon the mileage factor.
Daniel: thank you, I have tried to find this weep hole...where the heck is it?
Greg: yes, looks exactly like your picture, maybe even more corrosion on the o-ring.

It is very hard to see the weep hole, it is behind the water pump pulley. You would need a mirror most likely. I would buy the replacement o-ring and fix it now. Then order a Motorcraft pump from Riffraff and keep it handy for when the weep hole starts leaking. I replaced my hoses and t-stat when I did the pump. I reused my t-stat housing because it wasn't too rusty. You may need a new one depending on its condition.
OK, good advice. Do you have a link or instructions on replacing the pump? I seem to remember a special tool is needed to remove the pulley. Is this still the case?
The fan wrench from the 7.3 kit #27141 and the pulley holder wrench from the 4.9 ford kit #27018. The pulley holder in the 7.3 kit is difficult to use if working alone.
