I bought my 99 F-250 SD about a year ago and the guy said it had a rebuilt tran in it and I have the paper work in hand. I tow a 19 ft toy hualer and the tran has slipped twice. I'm new to towing and diesels, so I'm wondering what I need to do. I've heard 99's had a bad tran. So I'm thinking of doing some upgrades to my transmission so I can tow and not worry about anything.
Can we assume automatic? That would be the 4R100.
Not really a bad transmission at stock power levels, but not as good as the 5R110 that replaced it.
Temperature gauge, Preventive Maintenance, and more cooling are your best bangs for the buck. Heat and abuse are what usually kill these.
- A good aftermarket temperature gauge to monitor temps will help you.
- Flush it every 25-50K. Or immediately after any overheating....
- Replacing stock auxiliary cooler with the monster 29-31 row cooler from the mid 2000's 6.0 diesel will keep overheating from happening.
And if you decide to chip it or otherwise increase power, you need to upgrade internals.
yes it is an automatic. I have the gauge already. I do have a chip that adds 80 hp and tq. I don't usually have it in while towing though. I want to build it up internaly so I can up the power so it tows better. What are some things I can do internally?
BTS or John Woods come highly recommended, especially with the diesels. Brian at BTS basically dares you to try and break his trans. There are some guys with serious power that run them.
