hey guys...
first off...i know about these threads but couldnt find what i needed from searching...thanks for understanding
ok my truck is very hard to start in the am and after work...sometimes even when stopping at the store, etc.
a little info...have fresh oil 10w40 T5, oil full, hpop full, new fuel filters, new black cps from clay, newer batteries(checked voltage 14+), new alternator in summer, cleaned and checked all connections today, new stancor GPR, ohmed GP(all about 3 ohms), new tstat and no boost leaks. im probably missing something
anyway...it is hard starting and there is a good bit of white smoke when it starts. it even seems to have white smoke while idleing in the driveway...my daughter like heat on her way to school. it doesnt smoke while driving though. i have tried about everything i have read...so can someone plz help out? thanks alot in advance, this starting thing is driving me crazy
Ok, so white smoke at startup could be bad glow plugs or bad GPR, or the truck is simply too cold to combust the fuel. White smoke in the exhaust while running indicates unburnt fuel that has not combusted in the exhaust. Causes - broke lifters, bent pushrods, bent valves, stuck injector etc...
So, if you only have it at start then something isn't right with the GP or GPR or just too cold. But you've got that checked, and the GP LED mod says they're working (right?), so..... it shouldn't be too cold for your oil. Have you tried plugging it in? Does that affect the start?
How are the injectors? If one is putting out too much fuel, like a broke tip or stuck, it should have other problems, too. Does it eventually run ok?
Does it romp or clear up once the engine is warm? At the store- hot or cold engine. You've deleted the EBPV, how did that initially affect starting? Is this the first winter since you did that?
thanks for the help...this is the first winter i have had it...its been around 20 or below here in the am. maybe its common...never had a diesel before.
the truck runs fine...just hard to start. ill try the plug in and see what happens. thanks...
If i dont plug mine in, i can forget about going anywhere for a while. 45 or below i have to plug her in. 45-55 she starts HARD without being plugged in
Isn't 3 ohms to high? I thought that glow plugs should be 1.5-2 ohms max? just might want to check that. go to your local parts store with your meter and check a new one.
When it gets below 40 I leave the key on for about 40 seconds then recycle key and wait about 5 seconds to allow FP to built up pressure and then it starts right up.

if my plugs were all bad, would i have a real hard time starting?
also i havent tried plugging in yet...it has been unseasonably warm the last couple days. im going to try tonight.
thanks...
Chris just for kicks pull the plug off your ICP sensor and look for oil. Cold could potentially just be a coincidence. I had a bad ICP sensor and it was causing extended crank times.
