Alternator Bolt Stuck

Hello all,

My alternator in my '90 bronco, 5.8 liter went out on me. I'm trying to get it out to take a look at it and see if it can be rebuilt or if it's gonna need replacing. So, I removed the serp belt, and the top bolt on the alternator. Then came the bottom bolt. I managed to unscrew it with a pipe and some elbow grease, but I can't get it to come out. I keep turning it and turning it, but it doesn't come any farther. I found some posts about the lower bolt not wanting to crack, but nothing about it not wanting to come out once it's unscewed. By the way, while it will rotate around endlessly, I still have to use a wrech and a good bit of force to get it to turn. I've drenched it with WD40, pulled on it as hard as I could, and even tried using a C-clamp to push it out, but it won't budge.

I've never removed this kind of alternator before. I tried to find a blow-up of a 2g alternator, but the ones I found didn't show the mounting bolts. Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone here has ever had this problem, and if so, what they did about it?

Cheers,
Tim

Yes!!! I finally got it off!

When I was writing this, I got the idea of putting the C-clamp on it again, cranking it down, and rotating the alternator bolt at the same time. Came out slowly but surely. Oh well, maybe this will help somebody else having this problem.

Just to reiterate:

The lower alternator bolt was unscrewed, but wouldn't come out of the shaft. I took a C-clamp, and a short, slightly narrower bolt. I put the bolt in the back of the shaft, and tightened the C-clamp against the front edge of the alternator bracket and the smaller bolt. This made the smaller bolt put pressure on the bottom of the alt bolt. I then rotated the the alt bolt until the C-clamp loosened, re-tightened the C-clamp, and repeated. I did have to swap out the small bolt a couple times when it got too short. Not sure if all that's clear, but it's the best I can describe it.

Cheers,
Tim

I would say that the steel bolt and the aluminum had their typical reaction to each other and corrosion from the aluminum built up on the bolt. I have never liked the idea of useing steel with aluminum. You should coat that bolt with a good neversieze before puttin it back in. They also make a special coating to stop this from happening and we use it at work.

Thanks timmygyu,
Your description of the solution was great! Things this simple really get next to me when I'm working on stuff. Thank you for posting a good easy fix. My solution would have been to get a com-a-long.......
