defrost blwoing in 4 wheel drive

defrost blwoing in 4 wheel drive
ok so we got snow here in nj the other day. My vacuum lines no longer work so i manually lock hubs and then use switch. For some reason if i have the floor then switch to 4x4 it goes to defrost till i switch out of 4x4 and put it in neutral. any ideas why?

if i remember right from all the reading i've done on this site
if your not using the vac. line that goes to the hubs then u need to cap off the lines one on each side if not u don't have a vacuum and the system (i.e. heater controls use the same vacuum anyway thats my 2 cents if im wrong someone please correct me
