Smile Input needed on exhaust setup idea

Hey all, let me first off introduce myself since this is my first post here on FTE. I have a '86 f-150 300 i6, stock everything but the starter, alternator and battery have been replaced. doing a tune up (plugs, wires, dist. cap&rotor) once its a little warmer outside.

Truck currently has a drain on the battery (alt. turned out to be wired for electric choke, which my truck has a manual choke) and the carb is being replaced. (parts broken, stock air intake is taken off, housing totally broken, looking into k&n open filter for replacement once new carb installed.)

So thats my introduction/telling a little about my truck really. Now I should probaly get back on topic.

I am getting together some ideas for what I want to do with the exhaust and after doing countless hours of research here on FTE, youtube, calling speed shops in my area, talking with friends who have some nice setup etc., I've come to a conclusion.

I was thinking of cutting the stock pipe right before the cat, then running it into a 8" glasspack. I cant decide to go with a 3" ID or a 2 1/2" ID. (the pipe coming to/from cat is 2 1/4") I've heard the shorter the glasspack the louder it is, and thats what im looking for. Im moving to Florida in a few days so state inspections aren't a problem as I'm told. But after the 8" either 2 1/2" or 3" glasspack (which I would have to get a 2 1/4 to either size adaptor for) i was going to run it to the front of the rear tire, and out at 90 turn. I was thinking of using either the slash cut turn down pipe sold at autozone, or the 90 resonator/normal/no weird cut on the end pipe for the exhaust to blow straight out the side.

Thats my idea so far, any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated, since this is my first time doing this to a truck.

Im trying to go for good sound but also loud, you know, so people know im there. (SORRY future neighbors in Florida, I'll make up to you, I promise! ) loud pipes save lives.

Thanks again for all the input and so far I've found some great info here on FTE! definately recommended to friends!

i have a thrush turbo muffler off of a straight pipe on my 82. it sounds good but isn't so loud it makes your teeth chatter. but mine comes out behind the rear tire.

on my 89 i have twin glasspacks and that sucker is LOUD. if sound is what you are going for glasspacks are the top choice

yeah its the thrush turbo, the chambered one right? i was thinking of putting the inline cherry bomb glasspack (i forget specific name, but its this one... <a href="http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Maremont-2-1-2-in-outlet-dia-x-2-1-2-inlet-dia-x-8-in-case-length-round-glasspack-muffler/_/N-25in?counter=1&filterByKeyWord=glasspack&fromStrin g=search&itemIdentifier=232888_0_0_" target=_blank>GLASSPACKS LINK</a> ) cant decide on either the 2 1/2" or the 3" version of it, or if its better to have a shorter tube or longer tube too lol.

And yeah I've heard running a straght pipe after taking out cat to a y pipe then two straight pipes back with glasspacks on each is loud as ****, then would have two exhausts also, which could be interesting to do, but 2x more expensive lol.

I'm okay with that, as the glasspacks are only about 30$ each, and I dont want to buy two of them and the needed extra pipe and stuff if running just straight pipe thru the glasspack would be enough. So many ideas, so many to chose from lol aaah!

thanks alot though for your ideas stilrich!

so how would my original plan go? I've heard about that but I've never seen one in person so im not sure. how does cut the stock 2 1/4 pipe right before cat, then run straight pipe to a 8" long 2 1/2" or 3" ID/OD glasspack? or do you think it would sound better with a longer one? i just heard shorter=louder but im not trying to have it run ****tttty. all help is appreciated, thanks

i would run with three inch pipe, and use only one 8 inch glasspack, and dump in front of the tire.

and to clarify my 89' is a 302 V8 (hence duals), but my dads old beater 6 cyl ranger had duals on it and it was alright. waste of pipe though.

yeah that sounds good to me too, do you think cutting the pipe right before the cat then adapting the 2 1/4 stock pipe to 3", then running it back some, throw on the glasspack then continue with 3" back to the tailpipe? sound good?

and just one last thing i was wondering if it would sound much different with a slash cut tip on the tailpipe turned down/sideways rather than just a straight pipe facing straight out from the truck? i sortof prefer the straight pipe look but am curious on the sound difference.

Thanks alot too for replyin and helpin out man

You should check out Purple Hornies, good sounding glasspack in my opinion.

ill check them out, cause yeah im wondering if a 8" long glasspack is too little for the truck and itll lose to much low end torque and all that. if not, or if its not thaat bad, im all for it, cause from what im getting, itll be loud as hel] lol

sounds good, gonna pull out the sawzall tomarrow and chop the pipe, try to loosen it up and re-use what i can of the stock 2 1/4, then adapt it to 2 1/2 and connect to the glasspack and then continue with 2 1/2 out to a 90 or 45 infront of rear tire. found an 8inch glasspack im thinking of using, and ive heard a 3" OD would be too much and sound like a fart can for the 300 i6 so i think im going to settle with the 2 1/2 glasspack and maybe end the tailpipe with a resonator or something.

heres the glasspack im thinking of using.
