I bought this from Summit Racing and I'm happy with the sound.

Summit Racing SUM-684012 - Summit Racing® Cat-Back Exhaust Systems - Overview - SummitRacing.com

It's also 3" pipe.

A six cylinder with a single exhaust and a glasspack will sound just like those little 4 cyl cars running around with those loud pipes. If you run it straight out the side, it will be less noisy in the cab. If you want to go deaf in the cab, point the exhaust down to the road under the truck.

No experience with the six on glasspacks but one of our ground power units blew the muffler off and that 4.9 is one loud beast. Poor thing had the stock cast iron manifold and 10 inches of exhaust pipe left.

At idle she almost sounded normal but at 2500 I could hear the motor thru two sets of hearing protection (foam inside the ear and ear muff shooting style over). She sounded good actually just LOUD, very loud. *grin* And the metal body of the GPU got a wee bit warm there fast.

hahah woww, thats crazy man, mustve been LOUD!! lol. would be interesting to see it though haha.

heres a pic of the truck i just went out and took. going to take this one step at a time, so once i find my metal blades or a saw im going to go out and cut the muffler out first, try it, see how i like it and go from there. more pictures to come as i go on with my idea.

thanks man, and yeah this project may have to hold off for a little now though. battery drain wont let me start up the truck without a jump more than half the times i try to go somewhere. heard test clamp to negative terminal, and pull fuses is a good way to go about finding the drain, so going to give that a try tomarrow haha.

its alwayss somethin!

Every stock 300 I've heard that is loud sounds incredibly ricey. I suggest keeping both the cats (I actually think the second one is just a resonator) and having your way with the exhaust after that. I have both cats on mine, plus a cherry bomb turbo muffler, with a side exit (for simplicity) and to me it is great. Not too loud, but you can hear it. All 2.5" single pipe exhaust after the second cat.

I don't think the 300 in stock form should be something that is loud, at the risk of sounding like crap. I've never heard a straight-six powered ford go roaring by and thought, wow that sounds good. A modified 300, with a different cam, more compression, generally sounds pretty good, and has a pretty sweet idle.

My opinion, make it run first. Even no muffler will still be totally silent without the engine able to run.....
As for the exhaust, I am running 2.25" pipe, no cat, and a flowmaster 40 to a rear/side exit tailpipe (stock location). It's not loud, but has a nice tone. Windows up, it's almost unheard inside the truck. Windows down, it can be heard, but doesn't get obnoxiously loud.
There's nothing to be gained by stepping up to anything larger than 2.25" pipe mid-way thru. In fact, it can actually hurt power by losing velocity when the pipe suddenly increases in size.

If I was going to do anything with a six, I would get the split fuel injection manifolds and install them, try to get the stock pipe that went with them, and split it and put true duals on it. You would probably have to do this yourself, since no shop is going to modify the cat system. Where I get my vehicles inspected, he will pass it as long as it has a cat in each pipe, so I would have to add a cat in each one, then possibly a glasspack in each pipe. If I where doing it, it's easy for me to run both pipes out the pass side in front of the rear tire. If you wanted to run it out the rear, you could possibly buy one of those cat-back kits with the dual outlets coming out underneath the rear bumper, and then modify it to fit the dual pipes running down the pass side.

I don't know if you noticed it yet or not, but it's pretty much impossible to run a pipe down the driver's side of these trucks unless you run under the frame and then down the outside of the frame rail.

Nothing says "I'm an idiot" quite like a 6-banger with huge glass pack. Hope you enjoy your ghetto rider.

I've been reading along on this and let me throw something else out for folks to comment on. The exhaust tip...straight out or a turndown tip? Sound difference?
