My 97 Ford F-150 extra cab 4.6 l V-8 4x4 was in an accident where I blew my brake line and ran the curb which damaged the r/f undercarriage area (axle, tie rod, upper arm assembly etc.) I had truck fixed last week. My battery needed replacement so I bought a new one today and put it in. My check engine light is now on indicating code-PO353. This is ignition coil primary circuit number 3. I replaced both coils, wires, and plugs last summer. I did a visual inspection on the coils and wires and they seem all right. Neither coil shows any sign of it being burned out. Any suggestions? Could I have knocked something lose when I ran the curb in earlier accident?
The computer sees the coil for that cylinder as open.
Check out the plugup connection and harness.
Just 'looking' at it won't tell you if anything is open.
The computer has to apply a ground to the coil when it comes up in the fire order so the computer could even be faulty.
Get copy of the Haynes manuel to see the circuts and make tests.
Good luck.
Unrelated to the MIL, but if your brake line failed due to corrosion of the line, please make a report on NHTSA's website. I suspect that this is a largely unrecognized problem with these trucks.
I looked at my 97 f-150 again today because I was getting the PO353 code. I Checked all plugs and coil wires and made sure they were fastened properly. The driverside two top coils # 4 and # 7 were not making any spark. When I replaced this coil earlier in the year I snapped the original bolt that fastened the coil to the ground bracket. Looking at the coil from the top the #4 and #7 coils are clean and don't show any burned out signs. Could it be possible that I need to take off coil and clean the bracket and coil bottom due to a bad ground?
Checked the wires again today and noticed a broken wire going into the plug in on the d/s coil. Spliced together and taped and truck working smoothly again! Thanks for the help!
