HELP! My towing wiring harness is shot! All corroded and shorting out and causing the tail lights and instrument lights to blow the fuse in the fuse box under the hood of my 2001 F250.
It is the FACTORY Harness with the 7-pin and the 4-pin connector thingy.
Very pricey from ford, I can suggest what I have done while working on my trucks. I used the existing body plug end, spliced a yard plug wiring end and a new take off ford oem ebay plug and bracket to upgrade to better than what was offered when your truck was new. I obtained the trailer harness from the pick a part yard for an expedition/navigator, $5. only using the wiring and plug by the 7 pin end. Then on ebay I bought a new take off trailer plug which has the 4 pin and the 7 pin connector $30 shipped. The expedition plug plugs into the new ebay plug. Then you splice and shrinkwrap the end of your existing harness to the replacement setup I suggested since the plug is different by the rear body harness. All wires are color coded the same. I had searched far and wide for a good superduty harness to avoid doing this, going to many pick a part yards, etc, and either they are missing or destroyed beyond belief. Take off hitches are missing them, or its cut short. Pricing the harness from ed was well in excess of $100 without a new plug, I believe not even counting shipping. You can attach the new ebay ford oem take off plug to your hitch with 1 hole drilled in the bracket and 1 $3 stainless U bolt purchased from menards or home depot.
Thanks for all the great help and ideas. Looks I will have to do some soldering and re-work on the original to get it repaired. And the 4-wire plug is missing one of the copper sleeve thingies (it was corroded away to dust), so I will need to replace that part of the connector at the bumper area.
WHAT I CONTINUE TO HAVE IS AN ISSUE WHERE THE 15amp FUSE IS BLOWING! It is the 15 amp fuse in the fuse box under the hood. Even with the harness removed (for repairing) I blew a fuse again. This time it blew the fuse in an instant!
There must be a direct short someplace.... I hate trying to figure out wiring issues! Any suggestions on finding the problem here??
There are a couple relays under the hood which are added for towing. Possibly one is burnt? They are in the power distribution box under hood by the left side of the firewall/fender area.
