I have notice that my fuel gauge do not seem right, or the tank is a different shape. On my friends 01 powerstroke, the gauge goes down pretty evenly. Mine is just the opposit. The first quarter is gone in less than 60 mile, andthe first half is gone by 110. The last halfis about 200- 250 miles, My truck only has 870 miles on it, so i have only gone through a few tanks. I was just wondering if this was normal, or if i should have it checked out.
Mine does the same thing. Sometimes it seems normal and sometimes it just seems to get stuck in the same spot for maybe a whole day even if I put several miles on it.
I just kind of learned to guage when I need to fill up based on the trip odometer since I get pretty consistant mileage. I have the 29g tank and I usually fill it up when I've used up around 24g/270miles.
This is a common problem or should I say normal
situation.
What is happening is the computer is doing filtering of pulse to the guage caused by fuel slosh in the tank . here is a test ,the next time it does this , if you can park the truck on level ground ,turn the key to the on pos, wait about 10 to 15 mins ,then turn off, then back on this clears all the filtering going on .the guage should be okay .if it still is acting funny it needs to be looked at by a dealer. There is a TSB and a oaisis report on this.

I have two comments.....the first one is I don't kno if it is true but it makes a little bit of sense to me.....when I fill up I have 38 gallons of gas......that's a fair amount of weight.....once half the tank is gone...it's half the weight.....If you have a lot of weight in the bed it puts more strain on the truck.....The second thing is that the Ford gas tank isn't the best design for the sending float.....if you park down hill the tank will read 1/4 tank.....park up hill it could say 3/4 tank.....level ground it will read 1/2 tank.....I experience this everytime I park my truck.....it's cause the tank is of rectangluar design goin from front to back.....My second guess is the truth.....my first one is just something I reasoned out....not sure if it is all that true
I was just about to ask that question myself.
What the heck is up with that goofy guage.
50 miles to a half tank?!!
Then 150 miles for the next quarter tank?!
THEN it goes straight to "LOW FUEL WARNING LIGHTS AND WHISTLES" the next time I'm in the truck.
I'm getting the glass/Lexan type tank. This way I can just give it the visual check.
Fuel gauges going bad? Sounds like a cheap, cheesy video
rental.
What to do?
