I have replaced my gpcm and all 8 glow plugs this fall, and my truck still doesn't want to start in anything under 35 degrees. Any ideas on what I should check?
Batteries, Check battery cable connections. It Do a load test on each battery. When it gets colder the batteries loose a lot of the cold cranking amperage. If the battery voltage drops below 10.5 volts while cranking the truck will not start, also if the glow plugs are still on it will drop the battery voltage, Wait for the glow plugs to cycle off before starting.
If you switch to synthetic oil such as Rotella shell 5w40.. it will start without plugging in the engine heater down to "0" degrees.. But, like Bob says, your battery and connections must be good.. Wait 2 minutes with the key on and then try to start it..
Also, when I had similar issues, I cleaned my battery connections REAL well. Used sandpaper, not one of those terminal brushes, on both the posts and the insides of the terminals. Then I coated the posts and terminals with Noalox (it's a grease available at the electrical section of Lowe's or HD). What a difference! My two year old batteries act like they're brand new again.
Try for 30 seconds, connecting the two main power studs on the solenoid and if it starts fine, your GP relay could be out already. The Stancor relay works so much better. Welcome to guzzle's Stancor GPR replacement Mod Web Page
I have looked at the connections recently and they were pretty good, but I can check again. I also had Autozone load test the batteries and those are good along with the alternator, jumps to 14.7v when running. I guess the only thing to do is change the oil, but can the oil make that much of a difference?
Put a voltmeter on your batteries during a cold start. Put it in a position so you can monitor the voltage before and during the start. Let us know what you find but as it has been said you should be above 10.5v until start then it should rise to 12v until the gps shut off.
Also if the HPOP doesn't reach (if I remember correctly and someone correct me if I'm wrong) 250PSI then the injectors won't fire.
So as it has been said, make sure your voltage is correct and try the rotella 5-40 synth. We've all been enjoying the 5-40, specially on cold starts.

He has a GPCM, not a relay must be aCalifornia truck
