Am loving this whole site.. now i need some info, the more informative the better... my buddy gave me a 78 supercab 4X4, it had a 466ci big block in it.. currently has dana 44/60 w/3.73 gears np435 w/500 miles on rebuilt and new np205. motor went in 77 highboy with auto and 39.5s..usally a gas guy but really want deisel for towing, hauling, and power and better fuel mileage than an old V8...my thought was take an 6.9/7.3 add ats or backs turbo kit, 5" exhaust with through muffler (NO stacks) and no catalitic, some form of intercooler, and heavy tow clutch...the other iddea is the powerstroke turbo deisal 7.3. which i just located several complete pull outs still in the front frame rails of low mileage, fleet maintained short wheel base school buses, these use a stand alone harness and computer...
if my np435 won't fit or hold up what parts do i need to swap a 7.3 onto the back...
if these ideas work i need a parts list, install tips and issues, gearing thoughts, driveability thoughts and was also considering a dually converstion..any thoughts on that would help too...
Sounds like a really cool project. I toyed with the idea of putting a power stroke in my '53 F-100, but I couldn't find one. I came across a mustang 5.0 engine and trans, so I went that route instead. I hope you have access to plenty of heavy lifting equipment. . .good luck.

I've put a 5.9 cummins in my 90 mod it was the best thing I've done there is heaps of room around the engine being a in line 6 great power & mileage
to the o/p, try posting this in the idi 6.9/7.3 section. i do a little reading in there from time to time and it seems like there are quite a few guys with swapped in diesels there that could give you some good info.
the idi's seem to be a quicker, cheaper, simpler swap. not a hell of a lot of power, but they liven up with a turbo and even without one they will pull anything, they just won't pull it at a fast pace
if you can get one of the take out powerstrokes though, i don't see them being to difficult to swap if they have stand alone computers and also came with manuals tranny's.
You might be able to use the computerized 7.3 with the np435, if you have a flywheel for the 7.3 that will accept a pressure plate that will be able to run a clutch on an np435 you can do it.
THE 7.3 are 444di, therer commercial powerstrokes with stand alone setups from school busses..they come complte with allison autos...at 2k dollars its an expensive swap...the best i've foundon the cummins is 1200 for just the motor, then i still need mounts adapters and those odds and ends that always pop up...found a cheap 6.9 in need of rebuild, a seperate 7.3 turbo and a zf-5/tcase setup all total about 1100..i think thats the route i gonna go...
i know your in SweetHome but give this shop a call. Competition Concepts, Redmond, OR. Specializing in High Performance he is located in Prineville and has done many diesal swaps into older 60's and 70's fords. does very clean work. if nothing else someone to bounce ideas off of.
